About the ACE

The Concept

ICT Integration is about using ICT (largely computers and the Internet) as a tool to enhance learning and achievement of curriculum goals in the classroom. In the process of using ICT in this way learners should develop skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and independent learning. This concept is repeatedly mentioned in the Draft e-Education White Paper. It is a skill that teachers in South Africa will be expected to acquire as the proposed e-Education Policy is implemented.

The ACE (ICT Integration) is based on a set of interim professional competencies for ICT integration developed by SchoolNet SA. It is a specialised Advanced Education Certificate. The materials have been based on the Educators' Network which was developed jointly by Schoolnet SA, SAIDE and the Department of Education (SCOPE project).

The Model

This qualification is completely distance-based. At the beginning of each semester you will select the modules in which you wish to participate. You will be placed in online groups with up to 15 other educators. Your group will be assigned a tutor. You will communicate with your group and tutor using e-mail.

Please note that this course is conducted by e-mail and it is essential that you have a reliable e-mail connection and account. Using web mail accounts such as Yahoo, Hotmail and Webmail is not considered a cheap or reliable option. It is highly recommended that you use an offline mail application such Outlook or PegasusMail (or similar).

Once you have registered and paid for the qualification, you will be provided with a CD and printed student guide. The CD contains all the activities, supporting content and assignments. The student guide will provide additional information about assessment and course processes and deadlines.

You will work through the activities, discussing and sharing with your group and tutor as directed. These activities will provide you with the experience and understanding to complete the assignments. While completing the module activities you will be prompted to complete sections of the e-diary (in which you reflect about your learning experience). You will also be required to maintain a log of the e-mail interactions with your group. Together the e-diary, e-mail log and the assignments will make up the portfolio for each module.

You are assessed on your entire portfolio. There are no contact sessions and there will be no exams, although you may be required to attend an interview with the moderator. This interview may also be telephonic.

Note: Educators will also be able to register for just one module. This be will accredited (assuming that assessment requirements are achieved) and be recognised for the ACE at a later stage provided that the educator registers for the ACE within 2 years of completing the module i.e. if an educator completes a module in 2005 it would be recognised if the same educator registered for the ACE no later than 2007.
